There are three types of omega fatty acids: omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9. These are essential fatty acids that play important roles in maintaining good health.
Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods such as fish, flaxseeds, and chia seeds, and are important for heart health and brain function.
Omega-6 fatty acids are found in foods such as chicken, eggs, and vegetable oils (including argan), and are important for skin health and inflammation.
Omega-9 fatty acids are found in foods such as argan oil and avocados and are important for heart health.
It’s important to have a balance of all three types of omega fatty acids in our diets. To explain we use the analogy of a musical band. Just like a band needs different instruments to make beautiful music, our bodies need different types of omega fatty acids to function properly.
Or to use a sports analogy: Just like a sports team needs different players with different skills to work together and perform well, our bodies need different types of omega fatty acids to keep us healthy and functioning properly.
Omega-3 fatty acids can be thought of as the goalkeepers, helping to keep our hearts and brains healthy. Omega-6 fatty acids can be thought of as the defenders, helping to keep our skin healthy and manage inflammation. Omega-9 fatty acids can be thought of as the midfielders, helping to support overall heart health.
It’s important to have a balanced “team” of all three types of omega fatty acids, just as it’s important for a sports team to have a balance of different player types.
